If you want to have a program that runs this close to the metal, you'd better have a good reason to do so.  Most applications on modern systems run acceptably no matter what their language of origin.

However, there are still functions that cannot be performed any other way.  And as fast as a higher-level language may be, in a repeated loop invoked frequently by a large job, a millisecond here and there adds up to extra hours.
